J. Brandon Black Class of 1985

Brandon is currently an operating partner at Clover Crest Partners,

a private investment group founded by experienced public and

private company CEO’s and operators to invest in service-based

businesses located in the Western US. He also recently published

his first book called Ego Free Leadership.

 

Mr. Black retired as the chief executive officer and director of Encore Capital Group in 2013. Encore Capital Group, Inc. is a leading provider of debt management and recovery solutions for consumers across a broad range of financial assets and geographies. The Company purchases portfolios of defaulted consumer receivables at deep discounts to face value and manages them by working with individuals as they repay their obligations and work toward financial recovery. Headquartered in San Diego, Encore is a publicly traded NASDAQ Global Select company (ticker symbol: ECPG) and a component stock of the Russell 2000, the S & P Small Cap 600, and the Wilshire 4500. For the period between 2004 and 2013, Encore’s cash revenues grew over 400% from $235 million to $948 million and earnings increased 300% from $0.99 EPS to $3.04 EPS.

 

During Mr. Black’s nine years as president and chief executive officer, the Company built significant cost and operational advantages, expanded into new asset classes and made acquisitions

that established Encore as the industry’s leading debt management and recovery solutions provider. In 2011, Encore started the Consumer Credit Research Institute, a groundbreaking effort to develop new knowledge about low-and moderate- income consumers using state-of-the-art research and fieldwork techniques. In addition, in 2013, the Great Places to Work Institute ranked Encore’s subsidiary in Gurgaon, India as the 14th best organization in the entire country.

 

Prior to becoming the Company’s President and CEO, Mr. Black served as its Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer from April 1998 through December 2003. During that time, cash revenues increased from $30 million to $235 million.

 

From June 1989 until joining the Company, Mr. Black worked for

First Data Resources during the period of September 1997 through

April 1998 and for Capital One Financial Corporation from June 1989 until August 1997. At Capital One, Mr. Black led various operating units including credit, customer service, fraud and collections.

 

Mr. Black earned a MBA from the University of Richmond and

a bachelor’s of business administration degree from The College of William and Mary. His wife Dana graduated from the University of San Diego with a Masters in Nonprofit Leadership. They have three kids; Trevor (17), Aidan (10), and Leah (9). Trevor is headed to Baylor University in the fall.

 

Mr. Black is currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for

Santa Fe Christian Schools. He also serves as a CASA (Court

Appointed Special Advocate) for a foster youth.
