Description
This course is designed for students interested in Visual Arts as a hobby, as well as those seeking to advance toward a career. Elements and principles of design will be taught as the framework, with a focus on drawing techniques and composition. Color theory and color mixing will be introduces. Students will be exposed to a variety of 2-D media and techniques. Students will be required to keep an artist’s sketchbook/journal which will be graded regularly. Students will explore and respond to information about artists and concepts in Art History.

Elements and Principles Grab Bag - In Class

 
Students will use their knowledge of E&P's to create two unique works of art that depict a randomly drawn Element/Principle combo. Materials are unlimited for this assignment, but it must be created in class. (No work will be taken home.) Additional studio time is available upon request - 4th, 5th and 6th period as well as after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4. Students will present their work to the class on Monday 11/13

Art 1 students are required to supply their own 9x6 sketch book and complete assignments which will be graded weekly. The assignments will be posted online as well as in the classroom. Each student will be required to turn in his or her sketchbook on Wednesday of each week for grading.  Other drawings, project ideas, and class notes can be contained in the sketchbook as well. You will be given some time to work in your sketchbook during class, though I suggest that you do not rely on these times. These entries are graded on effort and execution of the assignment.

In Class Project - Sketchbook Surface Treatments

 
Create 5 spreads (10 pages) using various surface treatment methods in your sketchbook. Spreads will be graded as a part of your Week 2 sketchbook grade.

Art Cards - In class project

 (Cards not completed in class will be homework)
 
Artist Trading cards are miniature works of art created to show off the talent, style and creativity of an artist. 
Cards can be made with any media, materials or techniques. They can be produced as one-of-a-kind originals, in limited editions, or a series based on a theme.
 
Your assignment:
Create 9 Artist Trading Cards
Due September 12
Use marker, pencil, collage, paint, etc. to cover the ENTIRE front side of your card.
The imagery should reflect YOU!
 
Card 1: Autobiographical without words. (Things like sports, activities, hobbies, culture. etc.)
Card 2: Color media
Card 3: Pencil
Card 4: Collage
Card 5: Black and White (not pencil)
Card 6: Mixed Media (at least two mediums/materials)
Card 7: Landscape
Card 8: Portrait
Card 9: Non-objective (pure design)
 
Please write your name and "topic" on all cards.
