WHAT IS THE INTERVENTION & REFERRAL SERVICES (I&RS)/STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM?

This is a team of school personnel who have been trained to help identify "at risk" students and who intervene and provide help and support for these identified students.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE "AT RISK"?

"At-Risk" students are students who demonstrate observable behavior which can be attributed to chemical (drug/alcohol) use; students who may be experiencing poor mental health (depression/anxiety); and students who may have an eating disorder (anorexia/bulimia).

WHO REFERS STUDENTS TO THE I&RS PROGRAM?

Referrals come from teachers, friends, administrators, parents, or anyone who is exposed to the student and notice behaviors which could put the students "At-Risk".

IS THE I&RS PROGRAM A TREATMENT PROGRAM?

No. Members of the team are trained to identify changes in performance or behavior. If it is determined that a problem exits, an appropriate referral is made.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE AN I&RS TEAM/PROGRAM?

Schools are for education. Students under the influence of drugs or experiencing poor mental health cannot learn effectively. Often their actions are disruptive and interfere with the learning of others.

HOW ARE TEACHERS INVOLVED IN THE I&RS PROGRAM?

Teachers work closely with the students and often are the first to observe significant changes signaling that a problem may exist. The team provides the teachers with a way to seek help for "At-Risk" students.

WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?

All information coming to the team is strictly confidential and confined to those with a need to know.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Fill out a referral form for the student with a suspected problem. Referral forms are available in the guidance office, Assistant Principal’s office, or speak with a team member.
